Rules
-
A double hit is allowed on any first ball, including the serve. Doubling with Finger Action is only legal on an attacked ball with pace. A serve is never an attacked ball.
-
A ball is ruled in if it contacts the line. Sand can make a line move, and a ball mark that is clearly out can be used as a determination that a ball is out. A line that is standing up and a ball mark that is out is not a clear indication, and the referee will make the final determination (in, out, or replay).
-
Lines should be checked before the serve because the position of the lines at service determines the boundaries. If a line is moved during play it will be adjusted to determine an in or out call.
-
A ball contacted simultaneously by teammates is considered to be 2 contacts. Either teammate can make the next (3rd) contact.
-
All net violations during play are considered fouls. If the net is contacted after the ball has hit the ground, no foul is called.
-
Handsets over the net must be clean and in the direction (front or back) of your shoulders. If wind takes a clean hand set over the net, no foul is called.
-
No open hand tips are permitted. On an overset, if you go up for a joust or block and there is no opponent, you may be called for an open hand tip.
-
When jousting and the ball goes out of bounds, the opposite side from where the ball lands is considered to have caused the force for the ball to be pushed out. The side where the ball lands is awarded the point.
-
A joust is not considered one of your team contacts.
-
A block is considered one of the team contacts and either player may make the next contact on the ball.
-
One toss per serve.
-
Screening of the server is not permitted. A replay will be ordered if the serve is struck and the passer is screened.
-
For safety reasons, anytime a ball from another court crosses onto the playing court during live play, a replay will be issued.
-
For safety reasons, a ball cannot be played outside the sand boundary or on another court that is occupied with play or warmup.
-
Players can go under the net to play the ball as long as they do not interfere with the opponents.
-
If the first contact results in a ball going outside the antenna, a teammate may pursue it and bring it back onto their side along as the ball travels back to their side of the court outside the antenna.
-
During Coed play, a girl flashing her assets to the male opponent as a distraction is legal but highly questionable. Are you really going to read all these rules?
-
If a wrong server is discovered after a point is already played, that server will continue to serve and all points will stand. The service order will be adjusted at that point and play will continue.
-
A served ball that touches the net (let serve) is legal.
-
The official ball for the tournaments is the Spaulding King of the Beach ball.
